Looking for fun and meaningful November kindergarten activities? This month is the perfect time to bring hands-on math, phonics, literacy, writing, and Thanksgiving fun into your classroom! Whether you’re a kindergarten teacher or homeschool parent, these simple teaching ideas will help you keep little learners engaged while reinforcing important foundational skills.

But with shorter teaching weeks and busy schedules, it’s also important to keep activities simple and purposeful.

One of my favorite ways to plan for November is to combine seasonal activities with hands-on learning centers that reinforce the skills students are already practicing. This allows little learners to enjoy the excitement of the season while continuing to build important foundational skills.

Whether you’re teaching in a kindergarten classroom or homeschooling your little learner, I’ve gathered some of my favorite November kindergarten activities for math, phonics, reading, writing, and fine motor development!

1. Thanksgiving Math Activities That Build Number Sense

November is a great time to reinforce number sense through hands-on activities. Instead of relying only on worksheets, give students opportunities to build, compare, count, and talk about numbers.

Teaching Tip: Make Number Comparisons Concrete

Before introducing greater than and less than symbols, give students two groups of manipulatives to compare.

Have them:

  • Build two groups using counters, cubes, or other small objects.
  • Count the objects in each group.
  • Decide which group has more and which has fewer.
  • Explain how they know.

Once students understand the relationship between the groups, introduce the symbols.

Keep the Learning Going: One More, One Less

Number relationships are an important skill to revisit throughout the school year.

Your students can continue developing number sense by using manipulatives to explore what happens when they add one more or take one away.

Try this: Give students a number and have them build it with cubes. Then ask them to show one more and one less.

My One More One Less Hands On Center is a great option for continuing this skill practice beyond Thanksgiving.

2. November Literacy and Phonics Centers

Seasonal literacy centers can make phonics practice feel fresh without introducing completely new routines.

One of the easiest ways to keep students engaged is to use familiar activities with different themes, pictures, or manipulatives.

Teaching Tip: Keep Center Routines Consistent

Students are often more independent when they already understand how an activity works.

Instead of changing every center each week, keep the structure familiar and rotate the skills or materials.

For example, students might:

  • Match uppercase and lowercase letters.
  • Identify beginning sounds.
  • Build letters using manipulatives.
  • Sort picture cards by their initial sounds.

Keep the Learning Going: Letter Identification & Letter Sounds

For students who need additional practice recognizing letters and connecting them with sounds, an evergreen literacy game can be a helpful addition to center time.

The goal is to provide repeated practice in a way that feels engaging rather than repetitive.

3. Thanksgiving Writing Activities for Kindergarten

Writing can be challenging for young learners, especially when they’re still developing handwriting, phonics, and sentence formation skills.

I like to break writing into smaller steps so students can focus on one part of the process at a time.

Teaching Tip: Talk, Draw, Write

Before asking students to write independently, try this sequence:

  1. Talk: Have students explain their ideas aloud.
  2. Draw: Let them illustrate what they want to communicate.
  3. Write: Encourage them to label their drawing or write a sentence using the sounds and words they know.

This approach helps students organize their thinking before they begin writing.

How to Make a Thanksgiving Turkey

Procedural writing is a wonderful way to introduce sequencing.

Begin by discussing the steps involved in making a turkey craft. Have students use words such as first, next, then, and last as they explain the process.

Students can then draw and write about the steps.

November Writing and Bulletin Board Display

Another fun way to make writing meaningful is to give students an opportunity to share their finished work.

Displaying student writing helps celebrate their effort and creates a classroom environment where their ideas are valued.

Keep the Learning Going: Answering in Complete Sentences

Writing complete sentences is a skill that takes time and repeated practice.

Try modeling an oral response before asking students to write it.

For example:

Question: What is your favorite fall activity?

Response: My favorite fall activity is jumping in leaves.

Students can practice using complete sentences orally before transferring their thoughts to paper.

4. November Reading Comprehension Activities

Reading comprehension begins long before students can read independently.

Listening to stories, discussing pictures, answering questions, and retelling events all help build comprehension skills.

Teaching Tip: Ask Questions Before, During, and After Reading

Before reading, invite students to make predictions.

During reading, pause to discuss important events or information.

After reading, encourage students to retell what happened or explain something they learned.

For students who need extra support, offer picture choices, sentence starters, or opportunities to respond orally.

Seasonal reading passages provide another way to practice comprehension skills during the month.

5. Fall Sensory Bins and Hands-On Learning

Sensory bins are one of my favorite ways to bring hands-on learning into the classroom.

They can help students practice academic skills while also providing opportunities to strengthen fine motor coordination.

Teaching Tip: Give Sensory Play a Clear Learning Purpose

Instead of filling a sensory bin with materials and hoping students practice a skill, begin with a specific objective.

For example:

  • Hide letter cards for students to find and identify.
  • Have students locate numbers and build matching quantities.
  • Add shapes for students to sort and name.
  • Use ten frames and counters to practice number representation.

6. Low-Prep Kindergarten Activities for Busy November Days

November can be a busy month for teachers and families.

Between classroom celebrations, schedule changes, and holiday preparations, it’s helpful to have activities that require very little preparation.

Teaching Tip: Create a Ready-to-Go Review Folder

Keep a folder of familiar skill-review activities that students can complete with minimal directions.

Include practice for:

  • Letter recognition and phonics
  • Number identification and counting
  • Handwriting
  • Basic math skills

Choose activities that reinforce skills students have already learned so they can work with increasing independence.

November No Prep Phonics and Math Worksheets

When you need something simple and ready to use, seasonal phonics and math worksheets can provide meaningful review without extensive preparation.

8. Keep the Learning Going Beyond November

Seasonal activities are a wonderful way to make learning exciting, but the foundational skills students practice are important all year long.

By combining seasonal projects with evergreen centers, you can create a classroom routine that is both engaging and consistent.

As you plan your November lessons, remember that you don’t need a completely new set of activities every week. Familiar routines, hands-on materials, and purposeful skill practice can make a big difference.

I hope these November kindergarten activities give you some fresh ideas and make planning a little easier!

Happy teaching!
