Winter Sensory Bin for Sorting and Categorizing

Sorting and learning how to categorize items is an important foundational skill. With this sensory bin, children sort through a variety of winter and summer clothing items. Using the snowflake and sun as picture clues, children sort the clothing according to the season.

I started using these bins with my son when he was three years old. He definitely needed support, but it was an excellent learning opportunity. Here’s a video of him working through this bin and realizing that my clip art isn’t a great clue since it technically can be sunny AND cold!

Winter Sensory Bin for Number Formation

Penguins on ice allows kids to practice number identification and number formation while experiencing the perks of a sensory bin. In my winter-themed sensory bin, I used blue accent gems from the dollar store. They’re like marbles except they are flat on one side. The reminded me of ice so it was perfect for this sensory bin! I then took some snowflake foam stickers I had and threw those in as well. After hole punching the Penguins on Ice Number Cards and attaching them with a binder clip, the activity was ready to go. Using the accent gems, children have to fill in the number penguin. They should practice saying the name of the number as they work.

Winter Sensory Bin for Counting Objects

Another key math skill for preschoolers is counting objects to ten. This winter sensory bin is perfect for that! While playing Marshmallows Please, children pick a hot cocoa card and identify the number. The picture on the card will help them if they struggle with number identification. Using their large mug, they must use the cotton balls from inside their sensory bin to replicate that number.

Winter Sensory Bins for Letter Formation

Gingerbread Cookies is similar to Penguins on Ice. Children use the inside of their sensory bin to form the letters on each card. I used dried chickpeas and mini erasers in my winter gingerbread man sensory bin. I actually shared this bin in a winter sensory bin round up. It was a big hit!

Winter Sensory Bin for Letter Identification

This snowman sensory bin covers a lot of skills for our little learners. They can practice letter identification, the sequence of the alphabet and matching. After picking a letter snowball from their sensory bin, they must match it up with the correct letter on their snowman board.
