<h2 style="text-align: center;" data-key="52"><span data-key="53"><strong data-slate-mark="true"><span spellcheck="true" data-slate-content="true">Introducing the Chunky Monkey Reading Strategy</span></strong></span></h2>
<p data-key="54">The reason for using <a href="https://amzn.to/35FHu8F">Beanie Babies</a> to help teach reading strategies is because children find it easier to remember the characters than just the name of a strategy. And with remembering the characters, children can then make the connection to the reading strategy. It&#8217;s a win-win!</p>
<p style="text-align: center;" data-key="54"><iframe style="width: 120px; height: 240px;" src="//ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;OneJS=1&amp;Operation=GetAdHtml&amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;source=ss&amp;ref=as_ss_li_til&amp;ad_type=product_link&amp;tracking_id=mrsvschickade-20&amp;language=en_US&amp;marketplace=amazon&amp;region=US&amp;placement=B002Q4RN3A&amp;asins=B002Q4RN3A&amp;linkId=b8fbf8192d7acc8d90046cbee59b9fc5&amp;show_border=true&amp;link_opens_in_new_window=true" frameborder="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" scrolling="no"></iframe></p>
<p data-key="54">I refer to each <a href="https://amzn.to/35FHu8F">Beanie Baby</a> as our &#8220;Reading Buddies.&#8221; Whenever I introduce a new reading buddy I follow this routine:</p>
<ul>
<li data-key="54">Show students the actual Beanie Baby and introduce them by name.</li>
<li data-key="54">Explain the reading strategy that this particular Beanie Baby wants us to remember. It would sound like this:</li>
</ul>
<p>This is Chunky Monkey. Sometimes there are big words that are hard to read. Chunky Monkey reminds us to look for chunks in the word. Chunks are smaller words hiding inside bigger words.</p>
<ul>
<li data-key="54">Model using the strategy. I display an appropriately leveled text on our smartboard for this.</li>
<li data-key="54">Give children a Chunky Monkey reading strategy &#8220;watch&#8221; to wear. This gets them excited and wanting to use their new strategy. You can see a picture of my son rocking the <a href="https://mrsvschickadees.com/2021/01/21/eagle-eye-reading-strategy-using-picture-clues/">Eagle Eye</a> watch below!</li>
</ul>
<p><a href="https://mrsvschickadees.com/product/eagle-eye-decoding-strategy-using-picture-clues/"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-3180" src="https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide3-6.png?resize=354%2C354&#038;ssl=1" alt="Eagle-eye-reading-strategy" width="354" height="354" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide3-6.png?w=576&amp;ssl=1 576w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide3-6.png?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide3-6.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w" sizes="(max-width: 354px) 100vw, 354px" /></a></p>
<ul>
<li data-key="54">Do a group activity that encourages children to try the new strategy.</li>
</ul>
<h1 style="text-align: center;"></h1>
<h2 style="text-align: center;" data-key="54">Chunky Monkey Reading Strategy Activities</h2>
<p>So now let&#8217;s talk about the kinds of <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Chunky-Monkey-Reading-Strategy-Finding-Chunks-in-Words-4076100">activities</a> we can do to help support the Chunky Monkey reading strategy.  Here are some examples.</p>
<h1 style="text-align: center;"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-3306" src="https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide20.png?resize=400%2C711&#038;ssl=1" alt="" width="400" height="711" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide20.png?w=1265&amp;ssl=1 1265w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide20.png?resize=169%2C300&amp;ssl=1 169w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide20.png?resize=576%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 576w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide20.png?resize=768%2C1365&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide20.png?resize=864%2C1536&amp;ssl=1 864w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide20.png?resize=1152%2C2048&amp;ssl=1 1152w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide20.png?resize=800%2C1422&amp;ssl=1 800w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /></h1>
<h2>1. Finding Smaller Words Withing Large Words</h2>
<p>With this activity, children have to find a smaller word within the original word. I laminate these boards so that they can use dry-erase markers. This allows us to use these over and over again, and with a variety of guided reading groups.</p>
<p><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3324" src="https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide6-6.png?resize=1200%2C1200&#038;ssl=1" alt="" width="1200" height="1200" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide6-6.png?w=1265&amp;ssl=1 1265w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide6-6.png?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide6-6.png?resize=1024%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide6-6.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide6-6.png?resize=768%2C768&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide6-6.png?resize=800%2C800&amp;ssl=1 800w" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /></p>
<h2>2. Consonant Blends and Chunk</h2>
<p>I love these banana puzzles for our <a href="https://mrsvschickadees.com/2019/07/20/hands-on-learning-in-the-classroom/">phonics centers</a>. It allows children to work with consonant blends while also working on breaking up a word.</p>

<h2>3. Chunk the Digraphs</h2>
<p>These no-prep worksheets are a great way for children to practice breaking up words by separating the digraph from the rest of the word.</p>
<p><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3322" src="https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide4-11.png?resize=1200%2C1200&#038;ssl=1" alt="" width="1200" height="1200" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide4-11.png?w=1265&amp;ssl=1 1265w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide4-11.png?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide4-11.png?resize=1024%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide4-11.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide4-11.png?resize=768%2C768&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide4-11.png?resize=800%2C800&amp;ssl=1 800w" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /></p>
<h2>4. Compound Words</h2>
<p>These cards are a perfect guided reading warm-up. We use these to practice breaking up compound words.</p>
<p><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-3323" src="https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide5-7.png?resize=1200%2C1200&#038;ssl=1" alt="" width="1200" height="1200" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide5-7.png?w=1265&amp;ssl=1 1265w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide5-7.png?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide5-7.png?resize=1024%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide5-7.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide5-7.png?resize=768%2C768&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide5-7.png?resize=800%2C800&amp;ssl=1 800w" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /></p>
<h2>5. Word Endings</h2>
<p>We use no-prep worksheets to help identify word endings. This helps children practice breaking up the word so that it is easier to decode.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h2 style="text-align: center;" data-key="54">Chunky Monkey Visuals</h2>
<p>Providing visuals is a helpful tool for children. I like to hang up posters, provide desk plates, bookmarks, and more, to help children easily access our reading strategies.</p>
<h1 style="text-align: center;"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-3307" src="https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide21.png?resize=386%2C686&#038;ssl=1" alt="" width="386" height="686" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide21.png?w=1265&amp;ssl=1 1265w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide21.png?resize=169%2C300&amp;ssl=1 169w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide21.png?resize=576%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 576w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide21.png?resize=768%2C1365&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide21.png?resize=864%2C1536&amp;ssl=1 864w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide21.png?resize=1152%2C2048&amp;ssl=1 1152w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide21.png?resize=800%2C1422&amp;ssl=1 800w" sizes="(max-width: 386px) 100vw, 386px" /></h1>
<h2 data-key="54">Teaching Children to Use this Reading Strategy</h2>
<p>When it comes time to start working on this strategy with your students, there are a few things you can do to guide them.</p>
<ul class="unordered-list" data-key="56">
<li data-key="57">Remind them that big words don&#8217;t have to be scary, because we can often find smaller chunks within them</li>
<li class="list-item" data-key="66"><span class="list-item-child" data-key="67"><span data-key="68"><span spellcheck="true" data-slate-content="true">Model getting stuck on the word and using the Chunky Monkey reading strategy to decode it</span></span></span></li>
<li data-key="66">Have children ask themselves, &#8220;Does this word make sense?&#8221;</li>
<li data-key="66">Do activities that help reinforce this new reading strategy</li>
</ul>
<p>I typically follow the above at the start of our guided reading lessons. This provides an opportunity to remind children of important strategies, but it also gives me a chance to work closely with individual children.</p>
<div data-key="74">
<h2 data-slate-void="true" data-key="75">Providing Incentive to Students</h2>
<p>Okay, so your children know what Chunky Monkey represents, they understand how to apply it, but how do we get them to actually do it during independent activities?</p>
<p>Throughout the years I&#8217;ve come up with incentives and ways to encourage our children to do just that. Here are a few of the resources I use:</p>
</div>
<p>2. <a href="https://mrsvschickadees.com/product/eagle-eye-decoding-strategy-using-picture-clues/">Buddy Badges:</a> When I catch students using their reading strategy, I give them a <a href="https://mrsvschickadees.com/product/eagle-eye-decoding-strategy-using-picture-clues/">Buddy Badge</a>. Buddy Badges go on a chain and they say &#8220;I was caught using Chunky Monkey&#8221;. Children can wear these Buddy Badges during reading groups and reading time. Throughout the rest of the day, they have a place to hang them in our room.</p>
<p><a href="https://mrsvschickadees.com/product/chunky-monkey-reading-strategy/"><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-3320" src="https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide2-12.png?resize=515%2C515&#038;ssl=1" alt="chunky-monkey-reading-activities" width="515" height="515" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide2-12.png?w=1265&amp;ssl=1 1265w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide2-12.png?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide2-12.png?resize=1024%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide2-12.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide2-12.png?resize=768%2C768&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide2-12.png?resize=800%2C800&amp;ssl=1 800w" sizes="(max-width: 515px) 100vw, 515px" /></a></p>
<p>3. <a href="https://mrsvschickadees.com/product/eagle-eye-decoding-strategy-using-picture-clues/">Self-Checking Charts:</a> Another way to incentivize students is by providing self-checking charts. These charts are to be completed and filled in by the students themselves. Whenever they catch themselves using a strategy, they color the reading buddy in.</p>
<p><img data-recalc-dims="1" loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-3186" src="https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide9-3.png?resize=514%2C514&#038;ssl=1" alt="reading-strategy-activities" width="514" height="514" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide9-3.png?w=576&amp;ssl=1 576w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide9-3.png?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/mrsvschickadees.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Slide9-3.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w" sizes="(max-width: 514px) 100vw, 514px" /></p>

<p>While working with children in small groups, make sure to collect data so you understand which children need more support, and which are ready to move forward.</p>
<p data-key="38"><span data-key="39"><span spellcheck="true" data-slate-content="true">It is imperative that you find a system to help you monitor and track reading and comprehension progress.
